The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin has arrived in Crimea to mark the 5th anniversary of annexing the black sea peninsula. He is expected to participate in celebrations and calls it the “Day of Crimea’s Reunification with Russia”. Putin also commissioned two new power stations in the cities of Sevastopol and Simferopol.
Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014 in a move which was condemned by the international community. Moscow was slammed with sanctions days after the annexation. However, Ukraine a neighboring country still considers Crimea as its own territory and said it wants the peninsula back.
Putin will meet with residents of Crimea during his stay in Crimea. Only about 30 percent believe that Russia’s annexation of Crimea brought more good than harm down from the initial 62 percent back in 2014.
