Dakar’s 17th annual fashion week saw a high percentage of female designers participating in the yearly event. Over 80% of the featured designers in the show were African ladies. The show was also created and run by a Senegalese woman, Adama Ndiaye. Fashion is gradually coming up in Africa taking center stage in cities like Lagos and Nairobi.
According to Ndiaye, more women were featured in the event than men because she believes that women “know their bodies better than men do”. Various African fashion startups were featured including Lupita Swagga which is run by a Congolese designer Tchianna Pembey. There had been a lot of hurdles for many African startups especially in the fashion field but these are gradually being surmounted as more African startups become successful.
