Top European flight operators, Lufthansa and British Airways just suspended all flights to Egypt’s Cairo at short notice on Saturday following what they have categorized as a security concerns. Details of what prompted the decision are not yet known. British Airways officials in a statement say further assessments are being conducted. Following British Airways’ cancellation of flights, Lufthansa issued a statement that flights from Munich and Frankfurt have been cancelled.
Egyptian authorities have reported that British Airways have assessed its Cairo airport on Wednesday and Thursday. British authorities have advised travelers who have been affected to contact their airline. Following a Russian passenger jet bombing back in 2015, Britain has long advised its citizens against travel by air to and from Sharm el-Sheikh, an Egyptian resort.
Egypt’s tourism industry have been severely affected following a wave of terrorist attacks on the country since 2011 and subsequent bombing of a Russian jet in which all 224 people on board were killed immediately after take-off. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack which caused Russia to suspend all flights to Egypt for several years.
